Music Monday :: Black Sheep

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World holds a very special place in my heart.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World holds a very special place in my heart. I adored it when it came out, and saw it a handful of times in the theater. One time I brought my then 14 year old brother with me, and of course he loved it too. Another time I brought my laptop and took screening notes while I watched so that I could make a lesson plan out of parts of the movie for my Intro to Film Music course before the film had come out on home video. Of course I let the two other people in the theater now I was doing that, and they said it was cool.

Every once in a while I get in a mindset to listen to the soundtrack on repeat for days and I'm in one of those phases now. While admittedly I like the Metric version of "Black Sheep" better, I love that Edgar Wright recorded a full performance of the song with Brie Larson and then cut a music video/trailer to it.

Check back later this week for a more in-depth write up of this video. I used to use it in my film music courses as a way to teach musical form, and really it follows the verse/chorus structure of popular song incredibly well. While it fits true to Wright's editing style, it also uses some great audiovisual phrasing for emphasis. Hopefully that article will be ready by Wednesday or Thursday this week.

Until then…
