For my birthday last Saturday, Charlie and I headed down to South First for an early lunch/brunch/food time at Freddie's. It's not exactly a vegan-friendly place to go. In fact, I asked my waitress about vegan recommendations and all she said was "you would know better than I would." Not exactly encouraging to hear from an Austin restaurant.
Either way, we made it work.
We got there a little before lunch official began at Freddie's so we took our sweet time pouring over the menu.

After some digging I found a portobello mushroom sandwich that, without the cheese, looked very much vegan friendly. Plus, it came with sweet potato fries.

Seeing as he is from Texas, Charlie got the chicken fried steak and waffles.

It was a pretty good spread! Oh, and of course because we live in Austin we had a side of chips and salsa.

The grilled portobello sandwich is SO GOOD. Homemade hummus, grilled veggies, a giant, juicy slice of portobello mushroom. It was so fresh and tasty. I definitely would not mind going back for that again. And maybe next time we'll go to Sugar Mama's bakery and pick up some vegan cupcakes. ^^
Freddie's seems like a pretty kid friendly place too, but be careful. If they're bad they may get taken away by gypsies.
