what's the deal with ryan gosling?

I have a confession to make. I don't get it. What exactly is the big deal with Ryan Gosling? It's been sitting in the back of my brain for a while now… I know so many people that are completely infatuated with Ryan Gosling.

Here's my knowledge base thus far:

He seems to prefer roles where he can have lots of horrible tattoos drawn on him.

He likes roles where he can drive cool and/or fast things.

He likes to knit?

People (read: knitters) lost their minds when Ryan Gosling said in an interview that he learned how to knit from old ladies on set while filming Lars and the Real Girl. I'm going to go ahead and guess that he was just BSing in that interview because interviews are boring. I doubt he would actually spend a day off knitting. But that hasn't stopped a pretty healthy "Hey Girl" meme about knitting…

Not to mention the Feminist Ryan Gosling Meme… that I don't need to post pictures of because you know exactly what I'm referring to. There's even a book apparently.

So what exactly is the appeal? I admit I've only seen one movie of his all the way through so maybe there's something I'm missing? Or maybe it's because he was a Mickey Mouseketeer with Christina Aguilera, Brittany Spears, and Justin Timberlake yet turned out to be a somewhat competent actor and decent human being? Because I'm not sure he's really all that cute. But I do admire the wide range of roles and movies he goes for. Probably because he does stuff for funsies, because why not?

I guess I'm just missing something?
