This past weekend I participated in the Music & The Moving Image conference at NYU. My accommodations were in the East Village, and the conference was down on 4th by Washington Square Park, so while I was in town I explored and tried as many vegan eateries and dishes I could find. And let me tell you: it is so easy to eat fantastically if you're vegan and in Manhatten.
Eggplant Parmesan at John's of 12th St
Black Olive Seitan Hero at Sacred Chow
Vanilla Cupcake from Sacred Chow
Mac 'n' Cheese with Broccoli, Roasted Garlic, and Cilantro at S'Mac
Strawberry and Banana Pancakes from Atlas Café
Seitan Dream Pizza at Viva Herbal Pizzeria (vegan pizza by the slice!!!)
Fettucini Alfredo at John's of 12th St
Chocolate/Vanilla Cannoli at John's of 12th St
Apple Turnover at Atlas Café
Tofu Scramble at Atlas Café
If you're vegan and you're in New York you have to go to John's. No question. It's a traditional Italian restaurant with a second, entirely vegan, incredible menu of entrees, appetizers, and desserts. And all the vegan items are prepared on dedicated equipment. I spoke with the owner when I went in on Thursday night, and he said they had considered looking into a restaurant in Austin. Dear god, I want it to happen so bad. The eggplant parmesan is one of the best dishes I have ever eaten. Ever. They used Daiya mozzarella and were very generous with it, unlike many restaurants I have gone to. And the staff is fantastic. Shout out to Lawrence, the maître'd, and his wait staff who are incredibly nice and gracious and wonderful to chat with.
This was definitely the best food holiday I've ever had. Yum!
