Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ..... I think I'll have to split this between New Who and Classic Who.
New Who: Donna Noble
Donna Noble, the super temp. What an absolutely fantastic character. She was probably the most relate-able, realistic, believable companion from the New series. That's not to say that I don't love Amy Pond, because I really do love her. But I think as far as companions go, and as far as the template of The Companion goes as set by the Classic series, Donna takes the cake. No romantic nonsense. Although the flaw in her character's trajectory is her fate to Save the Universe. You just know by "The Stolen Earth" that all of her amazingness is going to get undone and make the entirety of her character development—amazing character development—totally meaningless. Because RTD has a way of taking wonderful things and then ending them in a totally ridiculous, disappointing, and frustrating fashion. Catherine Tate is a fantastic actress and she really made Donna real.
Classic Who: Sarah Jane Smith
How could it be anyone else? As much as I love Jamie, I love Jamie because of his relationship with the Second Doctor. Sarah Jane's chemistry with the Doctor, her compassion and caring, even love, for the Doctor is evident in every encounter she's had. I loved her with Three, and thought she had a great spirit and sense of independence. When she was with Four she turned a bit down that "get in trouble, scream, get saved" road, but still had spunk and intelligence and wit. And fantastic outfits.
Her interactions with the Tenth Doctor, in "School Reunion," "The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith," and in particular her brief scene in "The End of Time Part 2," were absolutely fantastic. You can tell she has spent most of her life reflecting on her time with the Doctor and taking out all of the positives and applying them to the way she lives and the work she does. Though, to be fair, she's really the first companion that we've been able to see after a fair amount of time away from the Doctor (The Brig not included, because he never really traveled much with the Doctor, I think just once or twice if we get technical about it). She really loves and cares for him, and because she has traveled with two different Doctors has a unique view into his personality and motives. I can't wait to see how she works with Eleven in The Sarah Jane Adventures later this year. (And she's going to meet Jo Grant! How cool is that?)
